History
of the West Medicine Lake Community ClubThe West Medicine Lake Community Club was founded on February 2, 1948 by a group of local people. A 5 1/2 acre tract of land was purchased, costing approximately $4,000.00. In 1951, a 40 x 40 cement block building was constructed, which cost $43,800.00. In 1952, the Women's Unit was founded. In 1962, the dance floor was built. Also in the early 1960s, the WMLCC Players was organized to entertain at banquets and various club events. In July, 1966, the entire club was destroyed by a fire which caused an estimated damage of $47,000.00. In 1967, the members rebuilt the club through determination and a good deal of hard work. In 1966, Marge Menard wrote the club song, "Thanks for the Memories." In 1968, Art Enkers and Kathy Michaelson designed and purchased the club pins. In 1972, the outside addition was built. In 1974, Art Enkers designed and donated the club flag. In 1975, a garage was built. In 1978, the old garage was made into our club room. Many additional improvements have been made since then. In 1980, new decor of lights were added to the main room. In 1981, a cement slab was poured for the new pavilion. In 1982, extra parking was made available. In 1998, a Fiftieth Anniversary party was held.
During the 1990s, the Club stopped attracting young families. The membership grew older and was less able to maintain the Club. A few members were doing a large percentage of the work. The building was used mostly for rental events. The City of Plymouth built another Community Center and many of the seniors went to the new center for activities.
Approximately 1998, a dance team found the Club and asked to practice there. Other dancers were attracted and membership started growing, but this time the emphasis was on dance. The Club had been unused on most week nights. At this time there are dance lessons or events on Tuesday through Thursday and some Fridays.
